Exquisite Warps Section 4: File Design for Painted Warps
Saturday July 19, 11am-2pm & Sunday July 20, 11am-2pm
Total 6 hours
Location: LMRM
2003 W Fulton St, Studio #215, Chicago, IL 60612
TC2 File Design for Painted Warps
led by Meagan Smith
Section 4 of Exquisite Warps will cover the basics of building weave-ready Photoshop files for the TC2 loom. This workshop explores pattern building through weaving drafts, translating image based files to the loom, experimenting with weft color blending while sampling on the loom. Students will experiment with weaving structures on a painted silk warp.
In this workshop we will cover:
Intro to file design single weft structures in Photoshop
Optical blending of colors
How to create a file ready for weaving
How variables change the overall design (yarn material, beating, color, etc)
Sample-weaving at the XXL loom width
Participation in this workshop does not guarantee any specific rental portion of the warp, nor a rental slot. We book loom rentals separately from workshops. *Your attendance in this workshop will be considered commensurate with our authorization training, which means we would consider you authorized to request independent rental time on the loom outside of this workshop.
EXPERIENCE LEVEL:
This is a beginner-friendly workshop. Attendees with no prior experience are strongly encouraged. Also great for experienced weavers looking to explore how to design for a painted warp.
MATERIALS:
Please bring your own laptop with Photoshop installed. This is required, as we cannot provide Photoshop access for any attendees. Optional - bring your own weft material you’d like to experiment with weaving.
Capacity will be limited to 15 attendees. These workshops are in-person only.
No refunds are available for cancellations or no-shows. If you find yourself unable to attend for any reason, we encourage you to find yourself a replacement and transfer your ticket to someone else who may be able to go instead. In the rare instance of emergencies, we will refund ticket sales should LMRM ever need to cancel a workshop.

Meagan Smith (she/they) is an interdisciplinary fiber artist, she is specifically interested in the hybridization of craft, design, and technology. As a main component of her process, all of her warps are hand-painted with dyes prior to being woven on the loom. The resulting atmospheric color fields are optically blended through the weaving process. Influenced by her experience as a competitive swimmer, dynamic underwater movement and waves inspire her undulating weave patterns and lines. Following the infinite eb and flow of weaving that also resonates with swimming, Smith creates works that are focused on perception and heightened sensory experiences.
Smith received her BFA from The University of Akron in Painting (2015) and MFA in Textiles at Kent State University (2021). Smith attended artist residencies in Japan, Norway, and Iceland. This next year she has upcoming shows at SOIL, Eastern Washington University, Northern Kentucky University, and Kirkland Art Center (NY).
