Warp Painting for TC2 Weaving
led by Meagan Smith

In section two of Exquisite Warps, students will discover the art of mixing dyes and applying them effectively to achieve stunning results on a silk warp. Students will work collaboratively across the warp in sections, using a variety of MX chemical dyes. Safety measures will be taken using these dyes while painting and during the rinsing process.

In this workshop we will cover:

  • Preparing a silk warp for dyeing

  • Preparing cotton wefts for dyeing

  • Mixing MX chemical dyes and application

  • Measuring and color accuracy

  • Painting tools & methods

  • Proper safety measures

  • Curing for color vibrancy

  • Rinsing & drying warp bundles

Participation in any workshop section does not guarantee a specific rental portion of the warp, nor a rental slot. We book loom rentals separately from workshops.*Attending Section 4: File Design for Painted Warps will be considered commensurate with our authorization training, which means we would consider you authorized to request independent rental time on the loom outside of this workshop.

EXPERIENCE LEVEL:
This is a beginner-friendly workshop. Attendees who love fun, color, and painting are strongly encouraged! Also perfect for experienced weavers looking to gain new skills in preparing warps for dye-painting, experiment with painting silk, and tips for organizing and washing dyed material for smooth installation onto a TC2 loom.

MATERIALS:
Apron & “slop” clothes required. All yarn and dye supplies are provided.

Capacity will be limited to 10 attendees. These workshops are in-person only.

No refunds are available for cancellations or no-shows. Meagan Smith (she/they) is an interdisciplinary fiber artist, she is specifically interested in the hybridization of craft, design, and technology. As a main component of her process, all of her warps are hand-painted with dyes prior to being woven on the loom. The resulting atmospheric color fields are optically blended through the weaving process. Influenced by her experience as a competitive swimmer, dynamic underwater movement and waves inspire her undulating weave patterns and lines. Following the infinite eb and flow of weaving that also resonates with swimming, Smith creates works that are focused on perception and heightened sensory experiences.

Smith received her BFA from The University of Akron in Painting (2015) and MFA in Textiles at Kent State University (2021). Smith attended artist residencies in Japan, Norway, and Iceland. This next year she has upcoming shows at SOIL, Eastern Washington University, Northern Kentucky University, and Kirkland Art Center (NY).
