Location: LMRM
2003 W Fulton St, Studio #215, Chicago, IL 60612
Warping On A Warping Mill
led by Meagan Smith
In the first section of this multi-part workshop, students will learn the essential techniques for winding yardage on a warping mill. This is an important aspect for preparing bundles ready for warp painting. Students will also gain knowledge on how to use specific warping tools in order to make the process of warping, painting, and winding smoother and more efficient.
This workshop will cover:
Intro to warping mill
How to thread a paddle and set up your warping station
Organizing your bundles
Makeshifting your space and tools
Project planning for yardage length and looms
How to find your materials/suppliers: yarns, dyes, other weavings tools
Participation in any workshop section does not guarantee a specific rental portion of the warp, nor a rental slot. We book loom rentals separately from workshops.*Attending Section 4: File Design for Painted Warps will be considered commensurate with our authorization training, which means we would consider you authorized to request independent rental time on the loom outside of this workshop.
EXPERIENCE LEVEL:
This is a beginner-friendly workshop. Attendees with little to no prior experience are encouraged. Also perfect for experienced weavers looking to gain new skills in calculating warp math for specific loom specs and projects, and specifically how to use a warping mill to prepare warps for future projects.
MATERIALS:
All yarn and equipment materials provided.
Capacity will be limited to 10 attendees. These workshops are in-person only.
No refunds are available for cancellations or no-shows. If you find yourself unable to attend for any reason, we encourage you to find yourself a replacement and transfer your ticket to someone else who may be able to go instead. In the rare instance of emergencies, we will refund ticket sales should LMRM ever need to cancel a workshop.

Meagan Smith (she/they) is an interdisciplinary fiber artist, she is specifically interested in the hybridization of craft, design, and technology. As a main component of her process, all of her warps are hand-painted with dyes prior to being woven on the loom. The resulting atmospheric color fields are optically blended through the weaving process. Influenced by her experience as a competitive swimmer, dynamic underwater movement and waves inspire her undulating weave patterns and lines. Following the infinite eb and flow of weaving that also resonates with swimming, Smith creates works that are focused on perception and heightened sensory experiences.
Smith received her BFA from The University of Akron in Painting (2015) and MFA in Textiles at Kent State University (2021). Smith attended artist residencies in Japan, Norway, and Iceland. This next year she has upcoming shows at SOIL, Eastern Washington University, Northern Kentucky University, and Kirkland Art Center (NY).
