Warp Sections: Paint and Weave
led by Meagan Smith

Have you been interested in painted warps for the TC2 but don’t know where to start? Are you a painter interested in the crossover opportunities with weaving? LMRM is thrilled to present this unique opportunity to support your painted warp project dreams! We’ll take care of all the technical labor setting up, washing out, and installation of a painted warp so you can drop in for one day to paint your own warp. We’ll take care of the hard parts, you’ll come in for the fun parts!

How will this work?

  • The workshop fees cover guidance on the basics of dye-painting as well as the yardage fee of your 2 yard reservation (specialty warps: $100/yard).

  • Each attendee gets full creative control within their designated section. Dye pigments will be provided by LMRM for you to mix your own colors. We will use Pro MX dyes from Dharma on 60/2 silk at 60 epi.

  • See images for the set up style we will use for painting. We will be splitting the entire warp across the exact width of the loom in 1cm raddle sections so you can work with a more controlled painting application.

  • You will be painting next to the 4 other artists who have reserved other sections of the 10 yard warp.

  • The 2 yards includes any “waste” material needed to tie on and off the loom, as well as the necessary transition dye space between each person’s section. Budget about 60 inches x 57 inches of actual painted composition space.

  • This warp will be installed on LMRM’s TC2 4W.

  • The first hour will begin with a demo on color mixing, safety, and dye application techniques. There will only be one day to paint, as we will need to wash out the silk the very next day.

  • We will not be painting until the last minute of the day. At least 30 minutes before closing will be dedicated to cleaning the studio together. Please also allocate time for a lunch break.

The Terms:

  • By signing up for your slot on the warp, you are committing to return to LMRM in July or August to weave it during a specific week according to the order of which your section is on the warp. (For example, if you have reserved the first 2 yards of the warp, you are committing to return to LMRM between July 13 - 19).

  • By reserving this slot, you agree to weave your 2 yards during your designated week, otherwise LMRM retains the right to weave it off and keep whatever is left as part of our sample library. We cannot delay or save your weaving session dates because we will need to turn over the loom and warp to the next weaver scheduled after you.

  • Participation in this workshop guarantees your specific 2 yard rental portion of the warp, but it does not cover the rental sessions. See here for loom rental pricing and specs. Those loom rental sessions must be scheduled and paid for separately. If you are not authorized for independent TC2 weaving, you must register for it prior to your rental period. Please plan accordingly for any additional fees or reach out to us via email at lmrmchicago@gmail.com for a complete price quote.

EXPERIENCE LEVEL:
This is a beginner-friendly opportunity. Attendees with no prior experience are strongly encouraged. Also great for weavers looking to explore design for a painted warp. Great for anyone with an interest in painting and drawing looking to crossover those skills to thread and woven cloth. Let’s have fun!

MATERIALS:
Please bring your own apron, “slop” clothes, and close-toed shoes you don’t mind getting wet!

All yarn and dye supplies are provided. We will have N95 masks, gloves, and goggles available, but you are welcome to bring your own.

Capacity will be limited to 5 attendees.

No refunds are available for no-shows. Review our cancellation & refund policy, privacy policy, and media release policy here.

Meagan Smith (she/they) is an interdisciplinary fiber artist, she is specifically interested in the hybridization of craft, design, and technology. As a main component of her process, all of her warps are hand-painted with dyes prior to being woven on the loom. The resulting atmospheric color fields are optically blended through the weaving process. Influenced by her experience as a competitive swimmer, dynamic underwater movement and waves inspire her undulating weave patterns and lines. Following the infinite eb and flow of weaving that also resonates with swimming, Smith creates works that are focused on perception and heightened sensory experiences.

Smith received her BFA from The University of Akron in Painting (2015) and MFA in Textiles at Kent State University (2021). Smith attended artist residencies in Japan, Norway, and Iceland. This next year she has upcoming shows at SOIL, Eastern Washington University, Northern Kentucky University, and Kirkland Art Center (NY).
