Color Magic
led by John Paul Morabito

Color is the provenance of the weaver. In weaving ocular mixing blends closely situated colors into new hues while the original remains intact. This co-presence of color enables dynamic possibilities of changing, living, moving chroma unique to weaving. Color Magic will engage experimental ocular color mixing at the loom using multi-tonal warps and mutli-color weft. Vocabulary will encompass drafting, building weave color blankets for sampling, and methods of application toward image articulation. During this two-day workshop students will develop drafts, loom files, explore possibilities directly on the loom, and collectively reflect on the potentials of future making.

Your workshop ticket also includes TC2 loom authorization at no additional cost, which will allow you to rent either of LMRM’s TC2 loom for independent projects outside of this workshop. EXPERIENCE LEVEL:
This is an advanced workshop. Attendees should have prior experience with multi-weft constructions or be ready for the challenge. As a skill-building opportunity, a series of asynchronous virtual workshops on drafting and building loom files will be made available for registration from August through October.


REQUIRED MATERIALS:
-Students will need a laptop with the latest version of Photoshop. Instruction will be presented on a Mac–anybody on PC will need to be prepared to translate.

-Compatible weft materials will be supplied for demos. However, students should feel free to bring weft material they are interested in exploring. In order to work properly, they will need multiple colors of the same material. Keep in mind, this is a weaving workshop focused on color mixing with multiple yarns so extremely thick materials such as rovings and ropes may not be appropriate. Students should feel free to explore but consider the balance between the warp material and the filling material.

Capacity will be limited to 15 attendees each workshop. These workshops are in-person only.

Participation in these workshops does not guarantee any specific rental portion of the warp, nor a rental slot. We book loom rentals separately from workshops and encourage you to book independent weaving time after the workshops here!

John Paul Morabito (they/them) approaches weaving as a polynary space beyond the binary. Their tapestries channel flamboyance, erotics, blasphemy, sacrement, mourning, and protest into glittering abstractions that reach for the promise of queer futurity. Recent institutional solo exhibitions include the Sonoma Valley Museum of Art and the Kent State University Museum. Their work is represented in public collections including the North Carolina Museum of Art among others. In 2024, Morabito was named a United States Artists Fellow. Morabito is Associate Professor and Area Head of Textiles at Kent State University School of Art. John Paul Morabito is represented by Patricia Sweetow Gallery in Los Angeles.
